Management of the ABP


All ABP activities are carried out by, or under the guidance of,
a Management Board made up of volunteers. 


Election to the Board

Members of the Management Board are elected both from and by the ABP membership; the Officer roles (Chair, Vice-Chair, Treasurer and Secretary) are elected by the Management Board from its own membership. 

Board Members actively lead the Association by taking actions to fulfil its aims, acting as Association ambassadors who represent existing and prospective members.  They manage the ABP by leading a workstream of activities and events, and taking an active interest in the activities of other Board Members and the Association as a whole. 

Advisory Board

In addition to the Management Board, in 2018 we have introduced an Advisory Board to help shape the ABP at a senior and strategic level. The Advisory Board is made up of senior leaders within our profession who bring their years of experience and understanding of the industry. They meet twice a year with members of our Management Board to review progress towards the ABP vision.

The role of volunteers

The Management Board retain the services of an Association Management company who carry out necessary administration and operational functions. For the most part, however, we rely on volunteers for service delivery, allowing us to ensure alignment of all our workstreams.

This role of volunteers in our activities is essential in keeping our community active, involved and connected with the Management Board, as well as keep our operating costs low to assist us in being sustainable.  Engaging members directly in the delivery of our objectives also supports their development for future opportunities to join the Management Board.  People learn by doing, and our volunteers gain new skills and valuable experience through their work on our behalf. Activities that cannot attract volunteers to support them are unlikely to add value to our members.

Additionally, our position as the leading professional body representing Business Psychology can be maintained only if we have a community supporting us.  Every member can be a champion of the benefits of the use of psychology in the workplace, and all are encouraged to come together as a community of practitioners and academics.
